Daniel looked at all the evidence he could find, and found less? cause ?for alarm than is often suggested.
1 ?WHEN APPLE cut its revenue estimate for the last quarter of 2018 because of unexpectedly slow sales of iPhones, markets ? convulsed .?
I'm convulsed with amazement. When the Fed first hinted that this day was coming in the summer of 2013, the investor s panicked and the market convulsed .
2 ? The company’s share price, which had been? sliding? for months,? fell? by a further 10% on January 3rd, the day after the news came out.?
?3 ? Apple’s suppliers’ shares were also hit .?
Rural areas have been worst hit by the strike.
4 ? This week Samsung, the world’s largest maker of smartphones by volume , which also sells components to other smartphone-makers, said its sales were weaker than expected for the quarter, too.
I could tell by the look on her face that something terrible had happened.
拓展一个跟volume相关的表达: speak volumes (about/for sth/sb) "充分说明,清楚表明", 之前读“ A Street Cat Named Bob ”遇到的:The look she gave him spoke volumes.
Export sales were weak at that time.
2 ?All this is terrible news for investors who had banked on continued growth.?
bank on sb/sth You can?bank?on?it. ?“别指望”就是“Don't bank on it.”?
?4 ?That smartphone sales have peaked , and seem to be levelling off at around 1.4bn units a year, is good news for humanity.
再看个例句:Interestingly, traditional SMS text traffic actually? peaked? in 2011!
Inflation is finally levelling out at around 11% a month. The figures show evidence that murders in the nation's capital are beginning to?level off.
1 ?People have voted with their wallets to make the smartphone the most successful consumer product in history: nearly 4bn of the 5.5bn adults on the planet now have one. 2 ?And no wonder.?
voted with their wallets Girls have voted with their wallet to make lipstick the most popular cosmetic product.?
? ?And no wonder. ? 所以第二句就说了And no wonder. No?wonder? you're on your own, lad.?
3 ?They connect billions of people to the internet’s plethora of information and services.?
4 ?Phones make markets more efficient, compensate for poor infrastructure in developing countries and boost growth.
5 ?Yes, they can be used for wasting time and spreading disinformation. 6 ?But the good far outweighs the bad.?
The machine had? outlived its usefulness (= was no longer useful ). outweigh也是out前缀,“重于”,我们原文中这句,可以改写成:The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
He's outgrown his passion for rock music. She's outgrown her obsession with fancy appearance.
Yes...But... Yes , getting up early to participate the morning reading was kind of hard for me. But the gain far outweigh the pain. (gain和pain的押韵,是得于下一段“ButApple’s pain is humanity’s gain.”
====================
2.? 解释:个人觉得这里as是连词,表示At the same time,同时发生~
